The Franciso Donatien factory is right in the heart of Pinar del Rio’s city, and became a cigar factory in the 1960s. The brand known as Vegueros was once manufactured at this location beginning in the 1990s and has since been discontinued. Take in the architecture of a building that is steeped with tradition, and was once actually an antique prison, and is still in operation today manufacturing cigars. Immerse yourself in the work of the tabaqueros as you watch them roll cigars. Purveyors of cigars can enjoy purchasing at the Casa Del Tabaco, where you can find some of Cuba’s finest.
Discover one of Cuba’s finest in the world of rum, the Guayabita del Pinar. Developed from the guava berries of a tree local to the Pinar del Rio region, this brand of Rum whose name translates to “little guava” has grown into something well-loved and famous, winning several awards locally and abroad. Take a visit to the factory, founded in 1892, where this local brew is concocted, and let your taste buds go on a delicious journey when you purchase an affordable bottle from the factory itself. You’ll soon see why this brand of Cuban rum is award-winning.
You’ll find yourself marveling at the gorgeous views from the Mirador de los Jazmines,or the Lookout of the Jazmines hotel. From this vantage point you’ll see lush, brilliant trees and countryside as well as views of the the cliffsides surrounding the Viñales Valley, Cuba’s most popular tourist destination.
Tobacco plantations and homes also decorate the valley, making this a sight to behold. Your eyes will then be captivated by the Mural of Prehistory, a 120 meter long painting sitting along the side of a massive cliff. This mural took four years and 18 people to bring it to completion, its rich colorful paintings of creatures, people,and prehistoric monsters telling a story of evolution. Truly, these are photo-worthy sights you’ll be delighted to stop and taking in.
The Cave of the Indian, or Cueva del Indio, will be an adventurous stop along your visit. Transport yourself to ancient indigenous history when you venture into this cave,traveling by motor boat down the cave’s underground river. Old and young alike will enjoy this relaxing ride through relics and shadows left from the aboriginals who took shelter there. Named for the bones and remains discovered there, this underground piece of history is a must-see.
