Located in Southern Cuba, it was originally settled by Taino indigenous people, then by French immigrants in the 19 th century. Renamed when it became a town in 1829, Cienfuegos literally means “one hundred fires” and became a thriving port city due to the fertile fields around it to grow sugar, one of Cuba’s biggest exports.

You’ll discover the colonial beauty of this era and its role in La Revolucion. Wander the streets and discover the six Neoclassical buildings that UNESCO designated as some of the best examples of 19 th century architecture in the world. Shop, take pictures, and enjoy this wonderful city!

This butter-yellow mansion was built in 1800 as the home of Don Pedro Jose Iznaga Borrell. It belonged to the Borrell family for years, and was later bought by a German man, Cantero. Perfectly preserved, original frescoes survive on the plasterwork of the main hall. In its gracious halls, Italian marble floors and large, open architecture abound.
